RF Series Flywheel Magnetos American Bosch

Here is some factory service info on the American Bosch flywheel magnetos. They were used extensively for small air cooled engines like many outboards as Caille,Scott Atwater,Coldwell and Ideal lawnmowers, Cedarburg products, and some early Gravely equipment.

The procedure described above is a quick and dirty coil test if you have a 6 volt batter handy. Remember to place a piece of paper between the contact points when doing this. If the condenser is original, it is probably bad. Over time they soak up moisture and develop electrical leakage. An automotive condenser will work fine and is cheap and readily available.  If the mag is a two cylinder and you wish to check for spark, ground one plug lead and perform the test, then ground the other lead and repaet the test as described above. The secondary windings are not grounded  and are wound in a loop.. The lightbulb trick will not check for a short or electrical leakage and is a good way to get a shock. Best to use an actual automotive condenser tester and test for electrical leakage.
